In the house, we started to take up the carpet in the living room yesterday, we were hoping that the floorboards might be good enough to sand and varnish as the carpet is foul and covered in dog wee and animal fur, but unfortunately, not only are they dirty and stained, there are also about 4 next to each other that are chipped, not nailed down and on lifting, you can see straight down into the sealed up cellar below the house which appears to have about 6 inches of water in it and possibly an old lawnmower. Not exactly safe, a bit spooky, and probably explains all the damp problems I've had in the house over the years. From sticking a torch down there it would appear that the walls of the cellar follow the walls of the house around the front but we can't see how far back it goes. I have called the housing association but will need to call them again tomorrow to harass them, I don't think it's safe or hygienic to have 6 inches of stagnant water lurking 8 feet below us, also I have wondered where this water is coming from, it could be sewer water even or maybe a burst pipe. So hopefully they will do something about it, maybe drain it, but if they uhm and ahh we'll be reporting it to environmental health to see what they can force them to do. And yes, a little bit of me did think...oooh...if we had the money we could get it turned into another level of the house!! Ha....
A bit nicer was the discovery under the carpet of what we think is an original inlaid green tile fireplace in the floor in front of the chimney breast, it is currently a bit dirty and stuck with bits of underlay but as it is set into the floor at the same level as the floorboards, we think it could be from when the house was built in 1891. It has a big crack in one side, but otherwise is perfect, it would be nice to make some kind of a feature out of it. It is all green tiles but with one big tile in the middle that has a picture of Lake Bala in North Wales (it has the name written on it). I'm not sure if I like it or not, but it's still lovely to find what could be an original feature in a house that's been converted into flats.
Anyway, we have to wait now to see whether the housing association can sort the floor out and then either agree to sand them up or just put laminate down instead.

I've been given areas to 'think about' that might be asked about in the (group) interview.
* The preparation you have done or are doing for the social work course, such as - The reading and studying you are doing - The people you are talking to - Conferences and training you are attending - Your work experience, both paid and voluntary - How you are finding out what social work is about and what is happening in social work today
* Your understanding of oppression and discrimination which includes - oppression and discrimination that you have seen - oppression and discrimination that you have experienced
* Examples of your skills, attributes and knowledge that would benefit the course and social work generally
During the group discussion they will be looking for evidence of the following
- Knowledge of social work practice - Awareness of social work values - Relating your experience to the discussion - Interpersonal and groupwork skills
